Generally speaking, the word “anesthesia” can refer to a loss of bodily feeling, which may or may not be accompanied by unconsciousness. Anesthesia has been utterly invaluable in helping to reduce the pain of surgery patients in the last hundred years, and general anesthesia is commonplace in virtually every corner of the globe. Other varieties of anesthesia act to numb local or regional parts of the body.
